The names in Nombrelia, and how common each one is, come from the official statistics each country publishes. Here you’ll find, country by country, the agency, the dataset, its license and the attribution it requires.
How to read the data in the app
- “#3 in Spain” is the name’s rank in that country’s most recent official statistics. Which statistics they are, and from what year, is listed in its source below.
- “In use” means the name is given in that country but is not on the newborn list its statistics office publishes (Spain, for example, only publishes the top 100).
- Each country publishes its data in its own way: some give the full list and others only the most common names; some count only the first name and others count each name separately, and in some the data covers a region or a city. That’s why ranks from different countries can’t always be compared.
- We write names the way each agency publishes them. When the source gives them in capital letters or without accents, we restore the usual spelling of the name in its language.
Meanings and origins
We write the meanings and origins of each name ourselves, based on the most widely accepted etymology. They’re a guide only: they don’t come from any official body, and many names have more than one explanation.
